U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature credit card is one of the top earning rewards credit cards on the market. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance identified this credit card as one of the best travel rewards credit cards in their December 2009 “Best List” issue.
The credit card starts earning reward points or FlexPoints right out of the gate. Cardholders can earn 10,000 FlexPoints upon enrollment with a new credit card. On standard transactions, cardholders earn one FlexPoint for each dollar spent, simply by using their FlexPerks Travel Rewards card. Double FlexPoints are earned on one category that the card holder spends the most on each monthly billing cycle from gas, grocery or airline purchases.

US Bank has some competitive online certificate of deposits that are nationally available. Their CDs require a minimum deposit of $1000 and you can apply online instantly. The current CD rates (as of 12/23/2009) are as follows:
Interest is paid annually and at maturity. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) assumes principal and interest remain on deposit for the term of the certificate. All interest payments for the advertised APY will be made at the end of the term or annually, whichever occurs first. Penalty will be imposed for early withdrawal, and CDs are automatically renewed at maturity.

Northwest Federal Credit Union is offering a 3.65% APY 5 year CD with a minimum balance of $25,000. If you deposit over $100,000 the rate jumps to 3.75% APY and lower rates are available for smaller deposits. You can also get higher rates than advertised if you’re a Premier Checking members or Heritage Club member. Northwest also has a 2 year Add-On CD with a 2.39% APY with only a $500 minimum deposit. You’re allowed to add on as much as you want as many times as you want for added flexibility. Credit Union CDs still seem to have an edge over bank certificates of deposit at this time.

IBERIABANK’s Visa platinum rewards credit card is a popular option for those with rock solid credit scores. It comes with one of the lowest APR’s in the industry as well as some very noteworthy rewards. The only real negative aspect of this credit card (when compared to all the other offers in it’s category) is that the design of the card is fairly simple and somewhat bland. However, this boring feature can be overlooked once weighed against the benefits and money-saving APR(s).

The parent company of UmbrellaBank.com – New South Federal Savings Bank has failed. All deposits should be secured because Beal Bank has taken over the bank. Here is the excerpt from the FDIC press release:
New South Federal Savings Bank, Irondale, Alabama, was closed today by the Office of Thrift Supervision, which appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. To protect the depositors, the FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with Beal Bank, Plano, Texas, to assume all of the deposits of New South Federal Savings Bank.
The sole branch of New South Federal Savings Bank will reopen on Monday as a branch of Beal Bank. Depositors of New South Federal Savings Bank will automatically become depositors of Beal Bank. D
